About the view

Ait Benhaddou Kasbah Towers

Two tall, crenellated towers rise at the center of the scene, their warm stone surfaces catching full Moroccan sun in deep shades of burnt sienna and terracotta. The view looks up and slightly across at the Ait Benhaddou kasbah complex, with ruined lower walls tumbling outward in cascading planes of amber and rust. Tall palms and a rush of golden-green vegetation press in from below, their fronds fanning against the crumbling facades in vivid contrast. Behind the towers, striated cliffs sweep upward in broad strokes of copper and ochre, and a wide blue sky with distant violet mountains closes the horizon.

The history & when to go

Ait Benhaddou is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, recognized for its outstanding example of southern Moroccan earthen architecture. The ksar — a collective term for this type of fortified village — was a key stopping point on trans-Saharan trade routes that connected sub-Saharan Africa to Marrakech. The site has been inhabited and rebuilt across many centuries, and portions of it remain lived in today, making it one of the best-preserved ksour in Morocco.

The warm afternoon light that floods the towers from the west is the same light captured here, and visiting around that hour brings every ridge and shadow of the facade into its fullest relief.

Behind the Passport

Explore the world, one canvas at a time.

Hi, I'm Nathan. I grew up in Ohio dreaming about the places on the map I hadn't seen yet, so I started The Painted Passport to turn real photos of those places into watercolor canvas prints. There are 570+ destinations so far, with new ones added every week.

I hope a little piece of Ait Benhaddou finds a home on your wall.
