About the view

Abisko Aurora Borealis Camp

A vast curtain of electric green sweeps across the night sky above Abisko, its edges bleeding into soft violet and pale pink where the aurora folds back on itself. At the center of the scene, a traditional conical tent glows a deep amber-orange from within, firelight spilling through its seams and pooling warmly across the blue-shadowed snow. A small campfire burns beside it, its ember glow the only other warmth in an otherwise frozen world. The horizon is low and dark, bare winter trees silhouetted against distant hills, leaving the sky to dominate — luminous, restless, and alive.

The history & when to go

The Sámi people have called this region of northern Scandinavia home for thousands of years, moving with the seasons and sheltering in tent structures much like the one shown here. The conical lavvu has long been central to Sámi life across the Arctic, offering reliable shelter in some of Europe's harshest winter conditions. Abisko itself sits within a national park established in the early twentieth century, and the area's unusually stable weather patterns, created by the surrounding mountain terrain, have made it one of Scandinavia's most celebrated destinations for aurora viewing.

The aurora season runs roughly from late autumn through early spring, with the darkest weeks around midwinter offering the longest windows for clear, uninterrupted skies.

Behind the Passport

Explore the world, one canvas at a time.

Hi, I'm Nathan. I grew up in Ohio dreaming about the places on the map I hadn't seen yet, so I started The Painted Passport to turn real photos of those places into watercolor canvas prints. There are 570+ destinations so far, with new ones added every week.

I hope a little piece of Abisko finds a home on your wall.
