WADI RUM, JORDAN | “The Valley of the Moon”

Wadi Rum is the most dramatic desert landscape in the Arab world — a vast valley of rose-red sand and towering sandstone and granite mountains that rises from the floor of the Hejaz in southern Jordan like a monument to geological time. Camels move unhurried across the valley floor. Bedouin camps glow at night under a sky so clear and so dark that the Milky Way casts a visible shadow. Lawrence of Arabia crossed this desert on a camel and called it “vast, echoing, and God-like.” UNESCO listed it as a World Heritage Site in 2011 — recognizing both the Nabataean and Thamudic inscriptions carved into the rock faces over two thousand years and the living Bedouin traditions that have shaped this valley for millennia. The Jebel Burdah Rock Bridge, the Seven Pillars of Wisdom, Khazali Canyon, and Lawrence’s Spring are the landmarks. The silence and the stars are the experience.
