SIWA OASIS, EGYPT | “The Pearl of the Western Desert”
Siwa is Egypt’s most remote and most otherworldly destination, a Berber oasis deep in the Western Desert, 50 kilometers from the Libyan border, where the ancient oracle consulted by Alexander the Great still stands among palm groves and shimmering turquoise salt lakes. The landscape is unlike anything else in North Africa: pink and turquoise pools edged in white salt crystal, the mud-brick ruins of Shali Fortress dissolving back into the earth, date palms and olive groves that have been cultivated here for five thousand years, and the Great Sand Sea beginning at the southern edge of town and stretching 72,000 square kilometers into the Sahara.
The colors are extraordinary and specific: turquoise salt-pool blue, warm kershef ochre, deep date-palm green, and the pure bone white of the salt crystal formations. The silence here is absolute. This artwork captures the luminous, remote, completely singular beauty of the oasis that has drawn travelers, from Alexander the Great to modern desert wanderers, for three thousand years.
