Prizren, Kosovo | Where minarets and church bells share the same sky

Prizren is one of those rare cities that wears its entire history on its face without apology. Ottoman mosques and Byzantine churches stand shoulder to shoulder above a river that has been catching reflections for centuries, and the old bazaar still smells of copper and leather just as it did when the city was a crossroads of the medieval Balkans. The Bistrica River cuts right through the heart of the old town, and in the late afternoon the light turns the stone bridges and terracotta rooftops into something that feels painted rather than built. Sitting high above it all, the ancient fortress watches over a city that has been Albanian, Ottoman, Serbian and Yugoslavian in turn, and has somehow emerged from each chapter more layered and more itself.

The watercolor palette here borrows from warm ochres and dusty rose for the old plaster facades, balanced by the deep verdigris of mosque domes and the cool slate blues of the Bistrica on an overcast morning. Where sunlight pools on the cobblestones of the bazaar, the palette warms into raw sienna and amber, while the hillside above the fortress calls for muted sage and the particular soft grey of Balkan limestone after rain.

The composition reveals layers of architectural heritage, from the foreground caravanserai with its distinctive arched colonnade to the mosque's geometric white domes and paired minarets.
