Getting Around
Prizren has no train station and is best reached by bus from Pristina, a journey of roughly 75 to 90 minutes on frequent daily services. Within the old town nearly everything is walkable, and taxis are inexpensive for trips to the fortress hill or outer neighbourhoods.
⚖️
Cash or Card
Cash remains the dominant currency in Prizren, particularly in the old bazaar, traditional restaurants and guesthouses, where card terminals are still uncommon. Visitors should withdraw euros on arrival and carry small denominations, as change for larger notes can be difficult to find in smaller shops.
☁️
Good to Know
Prizren takes its coffee culture seriously, and lingering over a macchiato or Turkish coffee at a riverside cafe for an hour is entirely normal behaviour rather than an imposition on a table. Dress modestly when entering mosques or the Church of Our Lady of Ljevis, as both remain active places of worship and expect respectful attire regardless of the time of day.
🏧
ATMs
ATMs are available in Prizren town centre and near the main bazaar, operated by banks including Raiffeisen and ProCredit, and most reliably dispense euros in small denominations. It is wise to withdraw cash before exploring the old town deeply, as ATM density drops off quickly once away from the central pedestrian streets.
💳
Currency
Kosovo uses the euro as its official currency despite not being a member of the eurozone, a practical arrangement that makes budgeting straightforward for most European visitors. US dollars and other foreign currencies are not widely accepted in everyday transactions, so arriving with euros in cash is strongly recommended.
🔌
Plugs
Kosovo uses the European standard Type F two-pin round plug at 230V and 50Hz. Visitors from the UK, US or Australia will need an adapter.
🛡️
Safety
Prizren is widely considered one of the safest and most welcoming cities in the Western Balkans for travellers of all backgrounds, with very low rates of petty crime in the old town and tourist areas. Standard urban awareness applies after dark around the bus station area, but the old town riverside remains lively and well-populated well into the evening.
✈️
Airports
The closest international airport is Pristina International Airport Adem Jashari, roughly 75 kilometres from Prizren and served by a growing number of European carriers including Wizz Air, Swiss and Austrian Airlines. Shuttle buses and shared taxis connect the airport to Prizren directly, with journey times typically between 75 and 90 minutes depending on traffic.
