Nha Trang, Vietnam | 'Where the South China Sea Comes to Shore in Every Shade of Turquoise'

Nha Trang sits in a natural bay so perfectly curved it looks almost arranged, the kind of coastline that makes you understand why people have been settling here for over a thousand years. The Cham civilization left its towers on the hill above the river long before the French arrived and built their villas along the seafront promenade. Light here is coastal and luminous, arriving soft and gold in the early morning before sharpening into something almost metallic by midday, when the sea takes on a deep cobalt intensity that painters and photographers chase year after year. There is a rhythm to the city that mixes fishing village practicality with beach resort ease, and somehow it works beautifully.

The watercolor palette of Nha Trang begins in the water itself, cycling from pale jade near the shore through vivid teal and into deep indigo further out toward the islands. On land, warm terracotta from the ancient Cham towers bleeds into the ivory and dusty rose of colonial facades, while the lush green of the hills behind the city provides a constant counterpoint to all that blue. The sunsets here turn the whole bay amber and coral before fading into a soft violet that lingers over the water long after the sun has gone.
