MOUNT FUJI, JAPAN | "Fujisan — The Sacred Peak"

Mount Fuji is the most sacred mountain in Japan and the most recognized natural form in Japanese visual culture — a 3,776-meter perfectly symmetrical stratovolcano on the Pacific coast of Honshu whose snow-capped cone has appeared in the woodblock prints of Hokusai, the poetry of Matsuo Bashō, and the daily visual consciousness of the 37 million people who live within 150 kilometers of its summit. The mountain is an active volcano — last erupted in 1707 — and its perfect conical form is the result of the basaltic lava flows that have built and rebuilt the cone over 100,000 years of eruption cycles, producing a shape of such geometric clarity that it has defined the Japanese aesthetic concept of fukinsei, the beauty of asymmetric perfection, since the Heian period.

The colors of Fuji shift through the day and the season in a way that has generated centuries of visual documentation: the deep blue of the mountain silhouette against the morning sky at dawn, the white of the permanent snowcap visible from the Shinkansen below, the deep grey of the volcanic rock above the treeline in summer, and the extraordinary pink-to-white gradient of the cherry blossoms at the Chureito Pagoda that frame the cone in the most reproduced photograph in Japan.
