FES, MOROCCO | “The Intellectual Capital of Morocco”

Fes is one of the world’s great medieval cities — and the most completely intact. Its ancient medina, Fes el-Bali, is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and the largest car-free urban area on earth: 9,000 alleyways, organized around the same logic they occupied when the city was founded in 789 CE. The Al-Qarawiyyin Mosque and University — established in 859 by a woman, Fatima al-Fihri — is recognized as the oldest continuously operating university in the world. The Chouara Tannery has been working leather in the same circular stone vats, with the same natural dyes, since the 11th century. To enter through the Bab Bou Jeloud — the great blue-and-green tiled gate — is to step into a city that never stopped.

The colors of Fes are warm and ancient: terracotta, saffron yellow, indigo blue, and the warm amber of hand-carved cedarwood ceilings catching lantern light. This artwork captures the layered, living beauty of the city that has been the soul of Morocco for twelve centuries.
