Chicago, Illinois
Part of the North America SeriesChicago Lakefront Night Skyline
Chicago, Illinois, United States | City of Big Shoulders, Painted in Lake Light
Chicago earns its mythology. Built and burned and rebuilt again on the edge of a freshwater sea, it carries the energy of a city that has always had something to prove. The grid of its streets is confident and unapologetic, the architecture soaring and strange, and the people who live here are fiercely proud of every neighborhood from Logan Square to Hyde Park. There is a vitality in Chicago that the cold months sharpen rather than dampen, and the summers feel like a reward the whole city celebrates together. This is a place where blues poured out of the South Side, where deep-dish pizza became a civic identity, and where a river was reversed just because someone decided it should be.
The watercolor palette here is deep and atmospheric, pulled from Lake Michigan on a steel-grey morning and from the amber warmth of a corner bar in the late afternoon. Think Prussian blue and slate washing into the white of a winter sky, then giving way to the warm terra cotta and honey tones of the historic Greystone facades in the north. Rust and sage creep in from the neighborhoods, and in summer the park greens are almost impossibly saturated against the chrome and glass of the skyline.
