ALULA, SAUDI ARABIA | “The World’s Greatest Open-Air Museum”

AlUla is one of the most extraordinary and least visited landscapes on earth — a vast desert valley in northwestern Saudi Arabia where the Nabataean civilization carved more than 111 monumental tombs directly into rose-red sandstone cliffs two thousand years ago. Saudi Arabia’s first UNESCO World Heritage Site, Hegra (Madain Salih), holds the largest preserved Nabataean settlement south of Petra — and the tombs here are larger, better preserved, and seen by a fraction of Petra’s visitors. Wind and time have sculpted the desert floor into a gallery of mushroom-shaped rock formations — including the 52-meter Elephant Rock — unlike anything else in the world. The Maraya concert hall, the world’s largest mirrored building, reflects the canyon walls and the desert sky in a structure that is both technologically astonishing and architecturally respectful of the landscape it inhabits.

The colors are warm and ancient: terracotta red, rose sandstone, the amber of desert light at golden hour, and the deep cobalt of the sky above the valley floor.
