Ålesund, Norway | The Art Nouveau City on the Edge of the Atlantic
Ålesund sits on a cluster of islands where the fjords meet the open sea, and the light here behaves unlike anywhere else in Norway. After a catastrophic fire swept through the town in 1904, it was rebuilt almost entirely in the Art Nouveau style, leaving behind a skyline of turrets, ornamental facades, and dragon heads that feels like a fairy tale frozen in stone. The city wraps around narrow waterways and fish-packed harbours, where wooden boats bob against pastel-coloured wharves and the smell of salt is constant. Perched at the edge of the Norwegian Sea, it carries the quiet confidence of a place that has always lived alongside wild weather and wilder water.
The watercolour palette of Ålesund is cool, luminous, and deeply atmospheric. Think slate grey washed with arctic blue, the warm ochre of rendered facades catching low Nordic sun, and the soft sage green of lichen-covered stone.
