Getting Around
Ålesund is best navigated on foot across its connected islands, with local buses linking outlying areas. A car or taxi is recommended for reaching Atlanterhavsparken aquarium and the island drives toward Giske, which are not easily walkable from the centre.
⚖️
Cash or Card
Norway is one of the most cashless societies in the world, and card payment is accepted almost universally in Ålesund including at small cafes and market stalls. Carrying a small amount of Norwegian krone is still sensible for car parks, some ferry crossings, and the occasional traditional vendor.

Good to Know
Locals in Ålesund take pride in their city's architectural heritage and tend to be quietly knowledgeable about it - asking about the Art Nouveau history is a genuine conversation opener. Punctuality is culturally valued, and arriving on time for bookings at restaurants or tours is considered basic courtesy rather than optional.
🏧
ATMs
ATMs are reliably available in central Ålesund, including near the main shopping streets and at the bus station. Most international cards work without difficulty, though checking foreign transaction fees with a home bank before travel is always worth doing to avoid unexpected charges.
💳
Currency
The Norwegian krone (NOK) is the official currency and the only one accepted locally - euros are not taken in everyday transactions. Norway is an expensive destination by most international standards, and visitors should expect to pay premium prices for meals, accommodation, and transport.
🔌
Plugs
Norway uses Type F outlets (Schuko) at 230V, 50Hz. Most European devices work without an adapter, but visitors from the UK, US, or Australia will need one.
🛡️
Safety
Ålesund is a very safe city with low crime rates and a calm, unhurried atmosphere even late at night around the harbour. The main practical risk for visitors is weather-related - coastal paths and the Aksla steps can become slippery in rain or frost, so appropriate footwear matters more than personal security concerns.

Airports
Ålesund Vigra Airport (AES) sits about 15 km northwest of the city centre on Vigra island, connected by the Ørsta-Volda ferry and road tunnel. Regular flights connect to Oslo Gardermoen (OSL) and Bergen (BGO), with Oslo offering the widest range of onward international connections.
