Yerevan, Armenia | The Pink City at the Foot of Ararat

Yerevan glows with a warmth that is almost geological. The city is built largely from volcanic tufa stone quarried from the Armenian highlands, and in the late afternoon sun its facades shift from pale apricot to deep rose, giving the capital its beloved nickname. This is one of the oldest continuously inhabited cities on earth, with roots stretching back to the 8th century BC, yet it carries its ancient weight lightly. Wide Soviet-era boulevards open onto lively cafe terraces, jazz drifts out of basement clubs, and the snow-capped silhouette of Mount Ararat, now across the border in Turkey, watches over everything like a quiet, permanent reminder of a complicated and resilient history.

The watercolor palette of Yerevan draws directly from its stone and its sky. Warm tufa pinks and dusty terra cottas anchor the urban scene, while the volcanic highlands beyond the city suggest deeper plum and ash-violet tones. The green of apricot orchards in spring and the vivid cobalt of a Caucasus summer sky complete a palette that feels both ancient and surprisingly alive.

A major thoroughfare cuts through Yerevan's urban fabric, lined with characteristic salmon-colored Soviet apartment blocks that frame the scene. The diffused light of an overcast day softens the cityscape while the numerous white cars and vintage Lada trucks create a distinctly Armenian street rhythm. In the distance, the modern skyline emerges as a reminder of how this ancient capital continues to evolve.

Bright sunlight bathes the distinctive terracotta brick facade, creating warm shadows that emphasize the building's geometric patterns and arched windows. The clear spring day conveys a sense of calm openness, with the bare trees suggesting early season renewal. Standing here would feel peaceful and contemplative, surrounded by architectural grandeur while modern city life continues quietly in the foreground.

Yerevan, Armenia / No. 03 via Van Mailian
This photograph captures Yerevan's striking contrast between natural geology and urban development, with the warm afternoon light casting an intense golden hue across the exposed rock face. The deeply carved canyon, likely formed by the Hrazdan River visible winding through the valley floor, creates a dramatic geological boundary that separates the foreground's raw, layered stone from the city's residential density beyond. Often overlooked is the delicate balance of vegetation clinging to the canyon walls, small patches of green that survive in this otherwise barren geological landscape, suggesting the tenacity of nature even within Armenia's capital.
