Valparaíso, Chile
Part of the Latin America SeriesColorful Hillside Port City
Valparaíso, Chile | 'The Jewel of the Pacific'
Valparaíso tumbles down 42 cerros toward the sea in a riot of painted corrugated iron, salt-bleached staircases, and murals that seem to grow from the hillside walls like living things. The city earned its UNESCO World Heritage status not through grand monuments but through the cumulative beauty of ordinary life stacked improbably on steep slopes above one of South America's great natural harbors. Light here does something remarkable in the late afternoon, turning the Pacific into hammered copper and setting the hillside houses ablaze in amber and rose. It is a port city with a poet's soul, the birthplace of Nobel laureate Pablo Neruda's imagination and the spiritual home of Chilean bohemia.
The watercolor palette of Valparaíso pulls from salt and iron and Pacific dusk. Painters reach instinctively for oxidized turquoise, the exact shade of old copper drainpipes against saffron-yellow walls, paired with a warm cerulean that belongs entirely to the bay at midday. Shadows on the cerros carry a deep violet-indigo, and the mist that rolls in from the ocean bleaches everything at the edges into soft pearl and bone white.
