TOKYO, JAPAN | "東京 — The Eastern Capital"

Tokyo is the largest metropolitan area in the world and the most intricate urban system ever built — a city of 38 million people in the greater metropolitan area that operates with a precision, density, and organizational sophistication that no other city on earth approaches. The city was built on the ruins of Edo, the Tokugawa shogunate capital, and the transformation from a feudal castle town to the largest city in the world in less than 150 years following the Meiji Restoration of 1868 is the most dramatic urban expansion in human history. The Tokyo that exists today is simultaneously ancient and radically contemporary — the temple precincts and shrine forests of the Heian and Edo periods exist within minutes of the glass towers of Shinjuku and the electronics labyrinth of Akihabara in a spatial coexistence of historical layers that is the defining character of the city.

The colors are the specific Tokyo palette of neon, shadow, and seasonal nature: the brilliant magenta of the cherry blossoms at Shinjuku Gyoen in late March, the deep gold of the ginkgo trees at Meiji Jingu Gaien in November, the electric blue and red of the vending machine light at 3 AM in a Shinjuku side street, and the pale grey of the city skyline seen from Tokyo Skytree on a clear winter morning with Fuji visible on the western horizon.
