TOFINO, BRITISH COLUMBIA | "Storm Capital of the Pacific Northwest"
Tofino is the most dramatically positioned small town on the Pacific coast of North America, a community of 2,000 people at the end of Highway 4 on the outer coast of Vancouver Island, where the full fetch of the open North Pacific arrives across 8,000 kilometres from Japan and the Clayoquot Sound temperate rainforest grows in constant saturation from the 3,200 millimetres of annual rainfall the coastal ranges intercept. Long Beach stretches sixteen kilometres of hard-packed grey Pacific sand through the Pacific Rim National Park Reserve, and the consistent 1.5-to-3-metre surf has made it the surf capital of Canada. The Wickaninnish Inn established storm-watching as luxury travel in 1996, and the specific experience of watching a full North Pacific storm from inside a cedar room above the surge channel is available nowhere else on the continent.
The colors are the temperate rainforest coast palette: the deep blue-grey of the North Pacific under a storm sky, the dark green-black of the old-growth Sitka spruce above Cox Bay, the pale silver of Long Beach at low tide when wet sand mirrors the overcast sky, and the deep amber of the cedar interiors that every Tofino building uses as the primary material of living at this latitude.
