Taxco clings to the Sierra Madre del Sur like a fever dream of cobblestones and colonial ambition, its whitewashed walls and terracotta rooftops tumbling down ridges so steep that staircases double as streets. The city earned its fame from silver, the same veins of it that drew Spanish colonists in the 16th century and bankrolled the breathtaking pink baroque towers of Santa Prisca Cathedral, which still preside over the zocalo with an almost theatrical authority. Light here is theatrical too, bouncing off mineral-dusted walls and catching the gleam of silver jewelry laid out in workshops that have operated for generations.
