TAOS, NEW MEXICO | "The Adobe Capital of the American Southwest"

Taos is the most culturally dense small town in North America — a high desert settlement at 6,969 feet in the Sangre de Cristo Mountains where three civilizations have occupied the same valley for over a thousand years: the Tiwa-speaking Taos Pueblo community whose multi-story adobe dwelling has been continuously inhabited since the 13th century; the Spanish Colonial land grant families whose acequia irrigation channels still water the valley fields; and the American modernist art colony that arrived when artists including Blumenschein, Phillips, and later Georgia O'Keeffe and Ansel Adams discovered that the high desert light — the way it models the adobe walls of the Pueblo in the late afternoon and turns the Sangre de Cristo Mountains blood-red at sunset — was unlike anything available in the European or East Coast artistic tradition they were trained in.

Taos Ski Valley
