SAVANNAH, GEORGIA | "The Garden City of the American South"
Savannah is the most beautifully preserved city in the American South, a planned Colonial grid of twenty-two live oak–shaded squares laid out by James Oglethorpe in 1733 along the bluff of the Savannah River, where the cast-iron balconies, the antebellum townhouses, and the Spanish moss draping every branch have created an urban environment of rare, sustained visual coherence. Forsyth Park sits at the southern anchor of the Historic District, where the 1858 white cast-iron fountain glows against the deep green of the oak canopy in the amber light of the Georgia evening, the defining image of a city that has spent three centuries perfecting the art of the beautiful street. The squares are not decorations; they are the actual living rooms of the city, occupied at every hour of the day by residents who understand their specific quality of light the way other cities understand their skylines.
The colors of Savannah are the palette of the Georgia Low Country: the deep amber of the live oak bark in afternoon light, the grey-green of the Spanish moss against a pale sky, the warm ivory of the Savannah grey brick that weathers unlike any other masonry in North America, and the specific soft gold that the Forsyth Park fountain takes when the last light of the day enters the tree canopy from the west and illuminates the white iron from below against the darkening moss.
