Merida, Mexico | 'The White City of the Yucatan'
Merida earns its nickname not just from the pale limestone facades that line its colonial streets, but from a quality of light that seems to bounce between the earth and sky with unusual generosity. Founded in 1542 atop the ancient Maya city of T'ho, Merida carries its layered history with an easy confidence, where Maya market vendors sell habanero paste beside French-influenced mansions built on henequen wealth. The city hums with a particular Sunday rhythm, when Plaza Grande fills with families, brass bands, and couples dancing danzón in the afternoon heat. There is a slowness here that is not laziness but intention, a place that has always known how to live well inside the tropics.
Painting Merida means leaning into saturated warmth: the scorched sienna of terracotta roof tiles, the honeyed ochre of sun-aged limestone, and the unexpected bursts of bougainvillea in fuchsia and coral climbing every courtyard wall. The watercolor palette softens at dawn into dusty rose and warm ivory, then deepens by midday into bronze and amber, before the golden hour wraps the Paseo de Montejo in a light that feels almost edible.
