Busan, South Korea | Where the mountains meet the sea and every alley tells a story
Busan is a city that refuses to sit still. South Korea's second-largest metropolis sprawls across a dramatic coastline where granite peaks tumble straight into the East Sea, and the energy between those extremes is electric. This is a port city shaped by centuries of maritime trade, by the chaos and resilience of the Korean War, and by waves of refugees who built entire hillside neighborhoods out of corrugated tin and sheer determination. That layered history gives Busan a rawness and warmth that is entirely its own, distinct from the polished pace of Seoul. Fishermen still haul their catch through Jagalchi at dawn, temple bells echo above the surf at Haedong Yonggungsa, and the neon glow of Seomyeon pulses long after midnight.
Painting Busan means leaning into a palette shaped by salt air and saturated contrast. The watercolors here pull deep from cerulean and cobalt for the stretches of open sea at Haeundae, then shift into warm terracotta and dusty rose for the stacked pastel houses of Gamcheon Culture Village. Mossy temple greens, the burnt sienna of drying squid on market racks, and the soft pewter of fog rolling in off the water complete a palette that feels both ancient and alive.
