Everglades National Park, Florida, United States | 'The River of Grass'
There is no place on earth quite like the Everglades. This is not a swamp in the dramatic, gothic sense but rather a slow-moving freshwater river, barely perceptible in its flow, stretching across the southern tip of Florida in a vast sheet of sawgrass and sky. The Calusa and Miccosukee peoples knew this land intimately for thousands of years before it became the only subtropical wilderness in North America to earn UNESCO World Heritage status. Light here behaves like nowhere else, bouncing off the water's surface at dawn in ribbons of copper and pale gold, and at dusk dissolving into bruised purples that seem to rise from the grass itself.
A watercolor palette for the Everglades leans into the tension between stillness and wildness. Think soft celadon greens and warm sepia browns for the sawgrass prairies, punctuated by the startling white of a great egret in flight. The water itself shifts between a tannin-rich amber in the sloughs and a hazy slate blue where the sky meets the horizon, with moments of deep mangrove shadow providing the darkest anchors in any composition.
