DOHA, QATAR | “Where the Desert Meets the Sea at Full Ambition”
Doha is the most architecturally ambitious city in the Gulf, a skyline of extraordinary contemporary buildings rising from the western shore of the Arabian Peninsula, where Jean Nouvel’s National Museum of Qatar in its desert rose-inspired discs and I.M. Pei’s final masterwork, the Museum of Islamic Art, announce a city that has decided to build its cultural identity at the same scale as its economic ambition. The 7-kilometer Corniche curves along the waterfront from the West Bay skyscraper district to the restored mud-brick lanes of Souq Waqif, where the falconry souq, the frankincense merchants, and the dhow harbor exist in complete continuity with the trading culture that preceded the oil wealth by centuries.
The colors are warm and specific: desert sand, Gulf turquoise, and the warm white of Qatari limestone at golden hour when the NMQ’s desert rose discs catch the last horizontal light. This artwork captures the extraordinary beauty of a city still writing its own story at full scale.
