CHEFCHAOUEN, MOROCCO | “The Blue Pearl”

Chefchaouen is Morocco’s most quietly astonishing city — a mountain medina in the Rif where the walls, stairs, doorways, and flower pots are washed in every shade of blue imaginable, from pale powder to deep cobalt. Founded in 1471 at the foot of the Rif Mountains, it was closed to outsiders for centuries, which preserved its extraordinary character intact. The light here is unlike anywhere else in Morocco: the blue surfaces scatter and soften it, so that even at midday the lanes feel cool and otherworldly. To walk through Chefchaouen is to move through a painting that was never designed as a tourist destination — and that became the most photographed street in Africa anyway.

The colors are dreamlike and specific: powder blue, deep cobalt, chalk white, and the warm terracotta of the flower pots that punctuate every wall. One hour east, the Rif Mountains offer some of the finest hiking in North Africa. This artwork captures the cool, luminous, completely singular beauty of the Blue Pearl.
