CHARLESTON, SOUTH CAROLINA | "The Holy City of the American South"
Charleston is the most architecturally intact colonial city in North America, a peninsula of 18th and 19th-century townhouses, steepled churches, and walled garden courtyards at the meeting of the Ashley and Cooper rivers, where the pastel-washed Georgian row houses of Rainbow Row, the Spanish moss–draped live oaks of South of Broad, and the harbor light entering simultaneously from the east and west create a cityscape unlike anything else in the American South. The Holy City nickname comes from the density of church steeples visible above the roofline, St. Philip's, St. Michael's, the Circular Congregational Church, a skyline essentially unchanged since the 18th century and the only major American city whose visual profile is still defined by its religious architecture rather than its commercial one.
The colors are the palette of the lowcountry coast: the warm coral and egg-yolk yellow of Rainbow Row facades in morning light, the deep moss green of the live oak canopy along the Battery, the pale silver of the harbor at dawn when Fort Sumter is a silhouette four miles offshore, and the chalky white of Bermuda limestone in the oldest building foundations along the waterfront.
