Bay of Islands, New Zealand | Where the sea holds 144 islands and every tide tells a story
The Bay of Islands sits at the top of New Zealand's North Island like a secret the country kept for itself. Warm subtropical waters lap against pohutukawa-fringed shores, turning brilliant red each December when the trees burst into flower. This is also the birthplace of modern New Zealand, where the Treaty of Waitangi was signed in 1840 between the British Crown and Maori chiefs, a moment whose weight still reverberates through every conversation about who this land belongs to and what it means. The light here is generous and golden, softened by sea mist in the mornings and sharpened by afternoon sun that makes the water look like hammered glass.
A painter reaching for the Bay of Islands palette would start with a deep pohutukawa crimson and layer it against the saturated cobalt of open ocean water. The hills running down to the shore carry a warm jade green, muted slightly by coastal haze, while the sandy coves glow in soft champagne and pale ochre tones. On overcast days the whole bay shifts into cool grey-lavender, with the islands floating like ink-wash silhouettes across the middle distance.
