Annecy earns every superlative thrown at it, yet somehow still manages to feel like a secret. The old town spirals around canal-threaded streets where flower boxes overflow from pastel facades, and the crystalline lake beyond reflects the Alps with the kind of stillness that makes you lower your voice. History settles gently here: medieval towers, a palace that once floated like a stone boat in the Thiou river, and centuries of Savoyard culture that feel very much alive rather than preserved behind glass. The light arrives soft and alpine, diffused by water and mountain air into something painters have been chasing for generations.
The watercolor palette of Annecy is fed by two sources: the lake and the stone. Think glacial turquoise and deep cerulean pulling across the water at midday, then warming into pale amber and dusty rose as evening settles onto the old town rooftops.
