The towering sandstone pillars, some stretching over a thousand metres into the sky, have sheltered Tujia, Miao, and Bai communities for centuries, their cultures woven into the folds of these ancient cliffs as naturally as the ferns and wild tea bushes that cling to every ledge. The region became a national forest park in 1982, the first of its kind in China, and its otherworldly skyline later inspired the floating Hallelujah Mountains of Avatar, though locals would tell you no film could quite capture the feeling of standing in the gorge as morning fog swallows the peaks whole. There is a particular stillness here that feels earned, the kind that arrives only in places where nature has had the final word for a very long time.
