Getting Around
A rental car is the most practical way to navigate the peninsula — the 17-Mile Drive requires a vehicle and Point Lobos timed-entry reservations are managed by car. The MST (Monterey-Salinas Transit) Line 24 connects Monterey to Carmel along the coast highway. For visitors without cars, the free Carmel-by-the-Sea trolley operates in summer between Carmel village and Carmel Beach, and the Monterey Trolley links the aquarium to downtown.
⚖️
Cash or Card
90% Card, 10% Cash. The Monterey Peninsula is thoroughly card-friendly — the Pebble Beach resorts, aquarium, Point Lobos reservations, and all major restaurants operate entirely on card and mobile payments. Keep a small amount of cash for Carmel Farmers Market vendors, the Cannery Row street food stands on summer weekends, and parking at the smaller coastal access points.

Good to Know
Point Lobos timed-entry reservations must be booked in advance at reservecalifornia.com — the reserve caps at 450 vehicles per day and the prime morning slots fill weeks ahead in summer. The 17-Mile Drive charges a per-vehicle toll that is credited back if you spend a minimum at the Pebble Beach Resort restaurants or shops. Carmel-by-the-Sea has no street addresses — homes use names rather than numbers, a tradition dating to 1916 that gives the village its specific navigational character.
🏧
ATMs
Chase, Wells Fargo, and Bank of America ATMs are available on Alvarado Street in downtown Monterey and on Ocean Avenue in Carmel-by-the-Sea. ATM access thins out considerably once you enter the Pebble Beach resort area and the Point Lobos reserve corridor — withdraw cash in Monterey or Carmel before heading to the 17-Mile Drive or the southern peninsula.
💳
Currency
The US Dollar is the currency. The Monterey Peninsula prices at a significant premium above most California coastal destinations — a night at a Pebble Beach resort runs $600–$2,000, a round of golf at Pebble Beach costs $625, and dinner at the better restaurants will land at $80–$150 per person before wine. Tipping is standard at 18–22% for restaurants, guides, and hotel staff.
🔌
Plugs
Type A and B (120V, 60Hz) — standard North American outlets throughout. No adapters needed for US devices. European and UK visitors need a Type C or G adapter respectively. The Pebble Beach resort rooms and the better Carmel hotels have USB-A and USB-C charging built into the bedside panels in recent renovations.
🛡️
Safety
The cold Pacific upwelling means the water temperature hovers around 55°F year-round regardless of air temperature — cold water shock is a genuine risk for swimmers who underestimate the thermal differential. The coastal trails at Point Lobos and the 17-Mile Drive are safe and well-maintained, but the surge channels and wave-cut platforms below the headlands are hazardous at high tide. Check the NOAA tide tables before scrambling the intertidal zones.

Airports
Monterey Regional Airport (MRY) offers direct service from Los Angeles (55 min), San Francisco (35 min), and Phoenix, with connections through LAX and SFO. San Jose International (SJC) is the secondary option — 1.5 hours north on US-101 with significantly more flight options. San Francisco International (SFO) is 2 hours north and provides the widest transatlantic connections to the peninsula.
