Getting Around
Within Langkawi, taxis and ride-hail apps are the standard mode of getting around since no public bus network connects the island reliably. Renting a car or scooter is widely recommended and dramatically opens up access to beaches, viewpoints, and the island's quieter interior roads.
⚖️
Cash or Card
Cards are accepted at resorts, larger restaurants, and tourist-facing shops, but smaller warungs, markets, and boat operators will expect cash payment. Carrying a wallet of Malaysian ringgit for day-to-day spending avoids the awkwardness of declined cards at roadside stalls and jetty ticket counters.

Good to Know
Langkawi is a duty-free island, which means alcohol and chocolates are sold at prices that feel almost absurdly low compared to mainland Malaysia. Dress modestly when visiting villages, mosques, or the Mahsuri Mausoleum, as conservative values remain very much part of daily life away from the resort strips.
🏧
ATMs
ATMs are clustered around Kuah Town, the main commercial hub, and near the Pantai Cenang strip where most tourist activity concentrates. Resort areas like Datai Bay have very limited ATM access, so withdrawing cash before heading to the island's northern or western reaches is strongly advisable.
💳
Currency
The Malaysian Ringgit (MYR) is the sole currency accepted across Langkawi, with no informal use of foreign notes even in tourist-heavy areas. Duty-free status on the island does not affect currency exchange, and the ringgit remains the everyday standard for every transaction from street food to resort bills.
🔌
Plugs
Malaysia uses the Type G three-pin plug standard at 240V and 50Hz, the same system used in the United Kingdom. Most resorts provide universal adaptor points in rooms.
🛡️
Safety
Langkawi is a genuinely low-risk destination with petty crime being rare and violent incidents toward tourists exceptionally uncommon. The main caution is on the water, as sea conditions can shift quickly during shoulder season and not all boat operators adhere to consistent safety standards.
✈️
Airports
Langkawi International Airport (LGK) sits just a short drive from Pantai Cenang and receives direct flights from Kuala Lumpur, Singapore, and several regional hubs including Bangkok and Singapore. The airport is compact and efficient, with taxi counters just outside arrivals offering fixed-price rides to all parts of the island.
