🚲
Getting Around
A personal vehicle is essentially required to reach Great Sand Dunes. The nearest regional airport is in Alamosa, roughly 56 km away, but most visitors fly into Colorado Springs or Denver and drive south through the valley, a journey that takes three to four hours from Denver with clear roads.
⚖️
Cash or Card
Cards are accepted at the park visitor center, the Great Sand Dunes Lodge, and most Alamosa restaurants. Cash remains useful for campground fees, roadside produce stands along Highway 17, and smaller stops in the valley towns, so carrying a modest amount is a practical habit rather than a strict necessity.
☁️
Good to Know
Afternoon thunderstorms build rapidly over the Sangre de Cristo range, especially in July and August, and the dune field is exposed and dangerous during lightning. Rangers ask visitors to descend from the dunes by noon during monsoon season, and locals treat this as firm advice rather than a suggestion worth testing.
🏧
ATMs
The nearest ATMs are in Alamosa, approximately 56 km from the park entrance, at banks and the local grocery store. There are no ATMs inside the park or at the lodge, so withdrawing cash before arriving is strongly advisable if any cash purchases are anticipated during the stay.
💳
Currency
The United States Dollar (USD) is the only currency in use throughout the region. Prices in the park and surrounding valley towns are straightforward with no additional tourist levies, and the entry fee to the national park covers all visitors in a single vehicle for seven consecutive days.
🔌
Plugs
Standard US Type A and Type B outlets, 120V at 60Hz. No adapter needed for North American devices, and a simple plug adapter handles most international electronics.
🛡️
Safety
Dune sand temperatures can exceed 60 degrees Celsius on summer afternoons, hot enough to cause burns through shoes. The park recommends hiking before 10 a.m. or after 4 p.m. in summer, and carrying far more water than feels necessary, as the dry altitude accelerates dehydration faster than most visitors expect.
✈️
Airports
Alamosa San Luis Valley Regional Airport (ALS) is the closest option, with limited connections through Denver. Most visitors fly into Denver International Airport (DEN), roughly 370 km north, or Colorado Springs Airport (COS), about 280 km to the northeast, then rent a car for the scenic drive south through the valley.
