Getting Around
Da Lat does not have its own passenger train service currently operational, so most travelers arrive by bus from Ho Chi Minh City, taking around six to seven hours on comfortable sleeper coaches. Within the city, motorbike taxis, app-based ride services like Grab, and rented motorbikes are the most practical ways to navigate the hilly streets.
⚖️
Cash or Card
Cash is strongly preferred in Da Lat, especially at the night market, street food stalls, flower vendors, and smaller guesthouses where card readers are rarely available. Larger hotels and a growing number of restaurants now accept Visa and Mastercard, but carrying a good supply of Vietnamese dong in small denominations makes daily life considerably smoother.

Good to Know
Da Lat has a notably cooler and more reserved social atmosphere than coastal Vietnamese cities, and locals tend to appreciate a quieter, more respectful manner from visitors. Bargaining at the market is expected but should remain good-natured, and dressing in a few extra layers signals awareness of the highland climate that locals quietly take note of and respect.
🏧
ATMs
ATMs are reliably available in central Da Lat, particularly around Nguyen Thi Minh Khai Street and near the central market, with Vietcombank, Techcombank, and BIDV machines being the most commonly found. Withdrawal limits per transaction are often set at around 3 to 5 million VND, so planning for multiple transactions across a longer stay is advisable, and transaction fees vary by home bank.
💳
Currency
The Vietnamese Dong (VND) is the sole official currency, and transactions in foreign currency are not standard practice in Da Lat even at tourist-facing businesses. Bills come in denominations from 1,000 to 500,000 VND, and it is worth familiarising yourself with the higher denominations early as the number of zeroes can be disorienting for first-time visitors.
🔌
Plugs
Vietnam uses Type A, B, and C outlets at 220V and 50Hz. A universal travel adapter is recommended, particularly for North American or UK devices.
🛡️
Safety
Da Lat is considered one of the safest cities in Vietnam for travelers, with low rates of violent crime and a generally unhurried pace that reduces the pressures common in busier tourist hubs. Standard precautions apply around the night market where bag-snatching from motorbikes has been occasionally reported, so keeping bags on the inside when walking near the road is a sensible habit.

Airports
Lien Khuong Airport (DLI) is the gateway to Da Lat, located approximately 30 kilometres south of the city centre and served by domestic flights from Hanoi, Ho Chi Minh City, and a handful of other Vietnamese cities. The airport is small and manageable, with taxis and pre-booked transfers taking around 40 to 50 minutes into town depending on traffic on the highland road.
